Bookmaking- Lotus Fold with Monoprinting

June 15 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

$100.00

Overview

Get an introduction or expand your knowledge of Bookmaking. This class also introduces monoprinting using gelli plates.

In this class we will explore the fun and sculptural book of the folding Lotus. Based in the the ancient Japanese form of folding paper, origami, we will make 2 different versions of this pop-up perfectly square book and make our own decorative papers to incorporate into them.

What you’ll learn:

Students will learn to make decorated papers with monoprinting using a gelli plate. They can be used for the covers and/or pages of the book. We’ll wrap decorative papers over bookboard creating the front and back covers. Then they’ll learn the Lotus Fold and how to use bookmaking tools like a bone burnisher.

This project goes by many names: lotus book, origami book, pop-out book. Whatever you call it, the result is a fascinating sculptural book that can be displayed on a shelf or hung like an ornament. The book consists of several basic folded units, glued together and then sandwiched between covers. Besides the fun of paper engineering, we enjoy the challenge of deciding what to put inside!

About the Instructor:

Jasmine Quinsier is a passionate maker professionally and in her free time. She’s defining and breaking the boundaries at the intersection between the drawn image and its digital counterpart. As part of our laser training team Jasmine overflows with positive energy and a true passion for creating using one’s hands, software, design, and laser cutting technology.
