Metal Lathe

The Metal Lathe is a foundational machining tool used for turning, facing, boring, threading, and precision shaping of cylindrical parts. It plays a critical role in Make Santa Fe’s metalshop, supporting everything from mechanical prototyping and repair work to custom hardware and precision components.

This machine is essential for members learning traditional machining skills as well as experienced fabricators producing accurate, repeatable parts.

Access Requirements

To reserve and use the Metal Lathe, you must:

Reservation Rules

  • Reservations are required and must be made in advance
  • Time slots are booked in hourly increments
  • Only one active reservation per member at a time
  • Setup, machining, and cleanup are included in your reservation time

Materials & Tooling

  • Approved materials only (steel, aluminum, brass, approved plastics)
  • Members must supply their own stock material
  • Standard chucks, tool holders, and basic cutting tools are provided
  • Specialty tooling (threading inserts, form tools, etc.) may be member-supplied

If you are unsure whether a material or operation is appropriate, ask staff before machining.

Operating Guidelines

  • Secure all workpieces properly in the chuck or between centers
  • Set correct spindle speeds, feed rates, and depth of cut
  • Use cutting fluid where appropriate
  • Never leave the chuck key in the chuck
  • Stop immediately if chatter, vibration, or unusual noise occurs

Safety & Responsibility

  • Eye protection is required at all times
  • No gloves while the lathe is running
  • Secure loose clothing, hair, and jewelry
  • Never leave the machine unattended while operating
  • Do not modify machine settings without staff approval
  • Report damage or issues immediately

Cleanup Protocol

  • Remove chips and debris from the bed and surrounding area
  • Return tooling, chuck keys, and accessories to proper storage
  • Wipe down machine surfaces as needed
  • Power down the machine following posted instructions

Cleanup is part of your reservation time.
