Meet the maker, Cia Thorne
Cia has been reinventing the architecture of glass for over 25 years. After training at the California College of the Arts, Cia later attended Pilchuck to study under the renowned glass maestro Pino Signoretto. Cia was invited to Corning to take a master goblet making class with Bill Gudenrath in 2015. Showing her diverse skill set she took a sculpting class with Martin Janecky at Urban Glass, in 2016. She has worked alongside noted glass masters Elodie Holmes and Lucy Lyon, and currently resides at Liquid Light Glass, owned by Elodie.
The combination of graphite and glass seemed to be opposing materials. Glass has the unique ability to invite us into the inner experience. Graphite takes up space as a solid presence. The complexity of the relationship lets me communicate the separation between mind and body. It has opened up new levels of seeing and brought a connection between these abstract forms.
Cia will also Discuss a Proposal to build a glass recycling center in Santa Fe
What if there was a way to use glass as gravel, building material, and functional housewares? Could we build equipment that not only crushes glass into small usable material, but also melt glass and mold form it into useful objects?
Let’s organize a group of people to brainstorm a proposal that moves recycling in Santa Fe forward. The prototype can be a household model glass crusher with the idea of selling to the public, all the way over to a type of incinerator in which we can use the excess steam to spin a turbine creating energy.
