This day and a half workshop involves the planning and crafting of a small chess board.

We will cover the design, planning, execution and finishing. With the knowledge and practices outlined in this course students can create custom tabletops, cutting boards, game boards or patterned door panels. In addition to creating the chess board itself, we’ll take a look at chess piece design and simple sanding techniques used to create handmade chess pieces.

Students will learn laminating techniques, sanding, and finishing as well as best practices in creating small wood objects.

We’ll use the following tools: Chop Saw, Table Saw, Planer, Joiner, and an assortment of clamps and sanders.

Wood and other materials are included with the cost of the class.

Saturday, April 29-12:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Sunday, April 30-12:30 pm to 3:30 pm

Prior to this class all participants must take Woodshop Certification: Wall-mounted Coat Rack Project and sign the Makerspace Agreement and Waiver.

About the Instructor:

James has been a designer since he can remember. Learning how to craft objects was part of his childhood. His father works as a woodworker creating custom kitchens and furniture. His first experience in making came from creating HO train sets. As a child his dad dedicated an entire small cabin to our family train set. Since then, he's studied in art, theater and and digital arts. James has worked as a carpenter, welder, designer, drafter, model builder, graphic artists, and now web designer. He loves to combine his passions into interactive, interesting or well crafted objects.
