Makers will begin with unmilled lumber and process it through various woodshop machines to learn to mill or foursquare boards as well as move through all the steps required to complete a woodworking project. This introduction will suffice for the required certification to use Make’s woodshop. No prior woodwork experience is required.

Topics include:

  • Chop sawing longer lumber to size
  • Face jointing to create a reference face
  • Edge jointing to square edge #1
  • Planing to a specific thickness using reference face and proper wood orientation
  • Rip and crosscut table saw instruction to achieve designation size
  • Drill press instruction to achieve both through and depth-designated bores
  • Band saw detailing

By the end of this class makers should have a general understanding of how to mill wood using Make Santa Fe’s resources and will leave the class with a personal hat rack. The class also provides an overview of tool protocol; emergency procedures; general safety procedures for operating non-CNC wood tools; required clean-up procedures; and studio etiquette.

Members are required to take this certification to gain access to equipment. No prior experience, however, is needed to participate. Proper attire- closed toed leather boots, long sleeve shirt, long pants, and a way to tie back long hair, is a requirement. A MAKE Santa Fe waiver will also need to be filled out before participation in this and every class. Finally, additional safety gear, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection will be needed for class, although MAKE provides this equipment for class participants.MEMBERS: Be sure to log in to receive your member discount on this class!

Cancellation policy: We offer a full refund if cancelled 48 hours prior to workshop. For cancellation on shorter notice, we extend account credit that can be applied to future workshops/events.
