Intermediate Wood Lathe: Goblets
Intermediate Wood Lathe: Goblets
Workshop Overview
Goblets are a classic and rewarding woodturning project that challenges both beginner and experienced turners alike. In this Intermediate Wood Lathe workshop, you’ll refine your spindle turning and hollowing techniques while creating an elegant, functional, or decorative goblet. Combining multiple aspects of woodturning—shaping, hollowing, and smooth transitions—this project will help you develop precision and control on the lathe. Goblets also make excellent gifts and showcase your craftsmanship in a single, beautifully turned piece.
What You Will Learn:
- Wood Selection – Choosing the right wood for strength, aesthetics, and ease of turning.
- Blank Preparation – How to size and shape your blank for an optimal turning experience.
- Mounting Techniques – Securely and safely mounting your blank to the lathe for stability.
- Lathe Techniques – Mastering the fundamentals of spindle turning, end grain hollowing, and achieving clean transitions.
- Tool Selection – Using the right gouges, scrapers, and specialty tools for shaping and refining.
- General Safety – Reinforcing best practices for safe and efficient woodturning.
Why Take This Class?
A well-turned goblet consists of five key elements: the foot, base, stem, bowl interior, and bowl exterior—each requiring careful shaping and smooth transitions. This project is an excellent way to develop your eye for proportion, improve tool control, and experiment with design variations. Whether you’re making a delicate, stemmed wine goblet or a more rustic chalice, this workshop will challenge and inspire your woodturning skills.
This hands-on session is ideal for those with prior turning experience who want to refine their technique while tackling a dynamic, multi-step project. By the end of class, you’ll have a finished (or nearly finished) goblet and the confidence to take on more complex turning projects.
