Ceramics Fundamentals – Surfacing Techniques Before Glaze

August 20, 2025
Add depth and character to your work through carving, sgraffito, slip, and underglaze—before it ever hits the kiln.

Experiment with multiple decoration methods on your own leather-hard pieces. You’ll leave with fresh designs and new confidence to personalize every form you create.

What You’ll Explore:

  • Carving & incising: planning and executing delicate line work
  • Sgraffito: layering underglaze or slip, then scratching back for contrast
  • Wax & paper resists: controlling negative space for bold motifs
  • Image transfer: learning how to create your own underglaze transfers
  • Slip trailing: applying raised, decorative lines with precision

Please bring 1–2 leather-hard pieces to practice these techniques directly on your own work.

Ceramics Fundamentals Series:

Elevate your wheel-thrown work with four focused evening workshops—each sold separately but best taken together to build a complete understanding of the ceramic process, from first throw to final glaze. Pick the sessions that match your interests, or dive into all four for a seamless creative journey.
