What you’ll learn
- Basic power hammer operation: How to start, stop, adjust, and lubricate the hammer. How to change dies safely.
- Power hammer safety: This is a powerful and dangerous machine. Safety requires constant attention and knowledge of your tools and materials. Eye and ear protection are required at all times. Learn the essential do’s and dont’s of forging and material handling under the hammer.
- Positioning: As with hand work, body positioning and awareness are important to work efficiently and prevent fatigue and injury. You’ll get comfortable with your work and your approach to the hammer.
- Basic forging techniques: We’ll cover the basic techniques of drawing, square-octagon-round forging, straightening, and adding fullering, shouldering, and spreading.
- Correcting mistakes such as off-square, bent, or twisted work.
- Use your knowledge to make a fire poker in class !
Class Details
A badge class is an introduction class designed to safely onboard you into our studios. In badge classes students complete a simple project using the tools in the studio and gain foundational knowledge of those tools. Anyone can take a badge class, and these classes are required for members to use the studio.
Adults and young adults (16+) are welcome to take any class at Make Santa Fe. Youth (12+) may take certain classes along with a parent or guardian. Ask us which classes are appropriate for 12-16 year olds..

The following is required for the power hammer badge class:
- Ear protection*
- Eye protection*
- Long-sleeve shirt
- Work gloves*
*Make will provide these items, but it’s best to bring your own.
The following is required for any activity at Make Santa Fe:
- Closed-toed shoes
- Safety Glasses
- Ear Protection
Location: 2879 All Trades Road, Santa Fe NM, 87507
Parking: Parking is tight, you may park along the road or in the limited parking in front of the building. The lot fills up quickly. DO NOT BLOCK THE GATE.
Schedule: Class is from 10am to 2pm, be prepared to run a little late. Please arrive early if this is your first time at Make Santa Fe.
