WORKSHOP: Sgraffito Clay DAY 1 of 2

Sunday, January 19 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

In this multi-session workshop, participants will learn the art of carving and incising designs into ceramic pieces, particularly using techniques with underglaze on leather hard and bisque-fired ceramics, including sgraffito and inlay techniques. The primary focus of the sessions will center on learning how to use the leather-hard stage of clay towards carving, creating everything from texture to drawing-like detail work on a final ceramic.

Concepts of how carving and texturing can influence glazes in the celadon range, techniques of blending slip with pigment, underglaze pencils, and slip trailing will also be discussed. Whether you choose to work with hand-built forms or wheel-thrown pieces, this workshop is designed to help you create a suite of beautifully surfaced pottery.

Class meets 2 Sundays: Jan 19 & 26 from 10-2 each day
