WORKSHOP: Nonferrous Metalsmithing: Sink A Bowl

Thursday, January 23 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

Experience an introduction to the art of Silversmithing with this Nonferrous Metalsmithing workshop, where you’ll craft a stunning 6″ copper bowl using traditional sinking techniques! In this 3.5-hour class, you’ll start by cutting a circle out of 18-gauge copper sheet using the Beverly shear. From there, you’ll learn the art of shaping metal as you use nylon sinking hammers and a hardwood form to gradually “sink,” and stretch, the copper into a bowl shape.

As you work, you’ll develop essential metalsmithing skills, including how to handle tools,  anneal, shape nonferrous metals, and use hammer control for smooth, even results. The final step of the process involves practicing planishing, using a flat or domed hammer with a steel stake then applying a rich patina to give your creation an antique, aged look that beautifully enhances the copper’s natural tones.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to cut metal sheet with the Beverly shear
  • The techniques of sinking a metal bowl using nylon hammers and hardwood forms
  • Annealing nonferrous metals
  • Planishing on a steel stake
  • How to apply & alter a patina to achieve an antique finish
  • Safe handling of tools and metals in a metalsmithing studio environment

At the end of the class, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted copper bowl to take home and display—perfect for adding a handmade touch to your decor or as a unique gift.

This workshop is designed for beginners and those with some prior metalworking experience. Come explore the world of metalwork in a fun, creative setting!
