Fundamentals of Handbuilding in Clay

Unlock your creativity while honing technical skills in this 4-week sculpture course. Participants will delve into the rich tradition of form-making, merging personal expression with fine arts principles. Through hands-on practice and guidance from experienced instructors, students will emerge from this course with a deeper understanding of clay sculpture, along with a collection of unique and personally significant artworks. Whether you’re a beginner looking to explore a new artistic medium or an experienced ceramicist seeking to expand your skills, Catherine will meet you where you’re at to expand your journey in the world of clay sculpting.
Meets on SUNDAYS from 10am – 2pm Oct 6, 13, 20, 27
What You’ll Learn:
- Handbuilding Techniques: Experiment with various handbuilding techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab construction, empowering you to sculpt forms with depth and dimension.
- Sculptural Concepts: Explore sculptural concepts and methods, learning how to translate ideas into tangible clay creations that resonate with personal meaning.
- Surface Decoration: Experiment with surface decoration techniques, including carving, sgraffito, and adding textures, to imbue your sculptures with visual interest and narrative depth.
- Glazing: Gain proficiency in glazing techniques suitable for cone 6 electric kilns, discovering how to layer and manipulate glazes to achieve desired effects and enhance the overall aesthetic of your sculptures.
Materials Included:
- Clay
- Studio tools including ribs, needle tools, fettling knives, and trimming tools
- Glazes, underglazes, and brushes
- Access to the MAKE clay studio for 4 weeks
*Prerequisites:
- Ceramics Badge is recommended but not required, this class will double as a Badge class
Please note:
- Students must be at least 16 years of age. Minors must have parental permission and signed waiver (ask us).
- MAKE will fire your pieces for you- we fire to cone 6
- Price includes clay and one-month membership so you can work outside of class
Who Should Enroll:
This course is ideal for hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts, and ceramics dabblers. Although this course is designed for beginners, this course can be adapted to any ceramics skill level. Your instructor will meet you where you’re at.

About the Instructor:
Catherine Czacki is an artist, writer and musician of Polish/Tatar and American descent. Czacki works across genres and mediums including ceramics, metal work, painting, sound, music, eco resin, paper mache and found objects. Czacki has taught general education introduction and art major focused ceramics courses as an assistant professor of visual arts at Eastern New Mexico University, and a per course ceramics class blending hand-built methods with wheel work, emphasizing the history of Raku at Clovis Community College.
