BADGE- Machining Metal: Metal Lathe

The Metal Lathe Badge Class is an introductory course designed to familiarize you with the basics of operating a metal lathe, one of the most essential machines in a machine shop. Whether you’re new to metalworking or looking to expand your skillset, this hands-on class will introduce you to key concepts like machine setup, safety protocols, and basic turning techniques.
In this 4-hour class, you’ll learn:
- Lathe Parts and Functions: Understand the core components of a metal lathe and how they work together.
- Safe and effective operation of a metal lathe
- How to set up the lathe and secure material properly
- Basic lathe operations such as turning and facing
- How to select and install cutting tools
- Understanding feeds and speeds for different materials
- Techniques to achieve precision cuts and finishes on cylindrical parts
By the end of this class, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to confidently use the metal lathe for basic turning projects. You’ll also receive your Metal Lathe Badge, granting you access to the lathe as a member and the opportunity to take on intermediate & advanced classes in the future.
Please Note:
- This class is open to participants aged 16 and up.
- Wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, and safety glasses (we have safety glasses available).
- All materials are included
- No experience necessary!
