Barry Kane

Barry Kane – Secretary, Board of Directors

After a distinguished 40-year career as a patent and trademark attorney, Barry Kane brings a unique perspective to the intersection of law, innovation, and technology. Throughout his legal career, he gained invaluable insight into the creative process of invention, working closely with inventors and innovators across diverse industries. 

Prior to his legal practice, Barry distinguished himself as a geophysicist for Gulf Oil and an inventor for Litton Industries, developing cutting-edge technology for the migration of seismic data and generators for producing seismological signals in the earth. This technical foundation provided him with deep expertise in complex scientific and engineering principles that proved invaluable throughout his patent law career. 

His commitment to professional service extends through various board positions, including his tenure on the Michigan State Board of Osteopathic Medicine, where he contributed to healthcare regulation and standards. He has also served on the board of Grand River Makerspace, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in the maker community, and 617 Kathryn LLC, a property management company. 

Barry’s dedication to community service is evident through his volunteer work with multiple organizations.  He was a volunteer and instructor here at Make for the last five years.  He also volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary of the United States Air Force, where he participated in search and rescue missions, emergency services and aerospace education. His commitment to education and science outreach includes volunteer work with the Santa Fe Alliance for Science and participation in the Santa Fe Adopt A School program at Nina Otero Community School.  He is also a substitute teacher in the sciences for Santa Fe Public Schools. 

Barry’s interests are diverse, ranging from woodworking, metalworking and machining to high power rocketry where he and a team of six each year strive to reach the bounds of space.  He is also an artist working in oils, clay and metal.   

Barry is married and the father of two children, balancing his professional achievements with a strong commitment to family and community involvement in Michigan and New Mexico.
